Nurturing Little Bookworms: How to Spark a Love of Reading in Kids

Hello, wonderful parents and caregivers! Mandy here, owner and creator of Novus Publishing House, and also a proud mum to three adult children and ‘Mand’ (no, they do not call me nanny or grandma) to four wonderful grandkids. Today, I want to share something close to my heart: how to ignite a love of reading in your children. As someone who grew up in the 70s, books were my escape, my dream world. They shaped my imagination, comforted me during tough times, and inspired me to believe I could one day tell my own stories.

I’d like to take you on a little journey back in time to my childhood, because I believe that the magic of books can do the same for your children; foster hope, spark dreams, and create a refuge of imagination that lasts a lifetime.

My Childhood and the Power of Books

Growing up in a small village with limited resources, our family didn’t have much money, but every three weeks, the mobile library van visited our village. That was my greatest joy; my window into worlds where I could be a daring explorer, a clever detective, or a brave adventurer. I devoured the Famous Five, Mallory Towers, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Stig of the Dump, The Borrowers, and many other classics that still warm my heart today.

Those stories taught me about the importance of friendship, courage, and pursuing one's dreams. They transported me beyond the confines of my world, and in many ways, they shaped my aspirations and my love for words. They planted a seed in my heart that someday I, too, would want to write stories that inspire children.

Why Reading Matters for Kids

Reading isn’t just about learning to decode words; it’s about opening a door to endless possibilities. It helps children develop empathy, expand their vocabulary, and ignite their imagination. It’s a form of escapism that can inspire dreams bigger than they ever thought possible, and that’s what I want for every child: to believe in their potential and to dream without limits.

As a parent and a publisher, I see every day how stories can shape a child’s worldview. That’s why I’m passionate about helping parents create a nurturing environment where reading becomes an exciting adventure, not a chore.

Here are my top 10 tips to encourage your children to fall in love with reading:

1. Lead by Example

Children imitate what they see. Make reading a visible part of your daily life. Let your kids see you enjoying books, whether it’s a novel, magazine, or poetry. Talk about what you’re reading and share your enthusiasm.

2. Create a Cozy Reading Nook

Designate a special, inviting space dedicated to reading, complete with a comfy chair, good lighting, and shelves filled with books tailored to your child’s interests. A cozy corner makes reading feel like a treat and a special time to escape.

3. Make Books Accessible

Keep books within easy reach: on shelves, in bags, or even in the car. When books are readily available, children are more likely to pick them up and explore.

4. Read Aloud Together

Set aside time each day to read aloud, even as your child grows older. Use different voices for characters, add expressive gestures, and make it fun. This creates a shared experience and fosters a love for storytelling.

5. Choose a Variety of Books

Offer a mix of genres: adventure, fantasy, mysteries, or even comics and magazines. Let your child explore different styles and find what excites them most.

6. Visit Libraries and Bookshops

Regular trips to the library or bookstore turn reading into an exciting outing. Let children pick their own books; it gives them ownership and makes reading feel like a special adventure.

7. Connect Books to Real Life

Find ways to relate stories to your child’s experiences. If they love animals, consider reading about them, visiting farms, or going to zoos. If they love space, explore books about planets and stars. Making connections deepens their engagement. After reading, why not ask your child to create a painting or a model of what they have read about, bringing their imagination to life.

8. Use Technology Wisely

Audiobooks and e-books can be great tools, especially for reluctant readers, children with learning difficulties, or for long car journeys. Just ensure screen time is balanced with physical books to foster a love for the tactile experience of turning pages, where appropriate for your child. I love an audiobook, it’s always my companion on days when I have to do chores I dislike (somehow it lightens the pressure of those chores). So, don’t be afraid to use audiobooks when you don't have the time for a bedtime story or if your child struggles with the written word in any way.

9. Celebrate Reading Achievements

Praise your child for finishing books, understanding stories, or exploring new genres. Small rewards or certificates can turn reading into a rewarding challenge.

10. Share Your Stories

Tell your children stories from your childhood or even write your own. Sharing personal stories creates a bond and demonstrates that storytelling is a gift worth sharing.

A Final Word from My Heart

I truly believe that every child deserves to experience the magic of books, just as I did. Books have the power to transform, inspire, and give hope. From my childhood, when I would visit the mobile library van, to my journey as a publisher, I’ve seen firsthand how stories can shape dreams and open doors to endless possibilities.

So, I encourage you, dear parents, to nurture the love of reading in your children. It’s one of the most precious gifts you can give them, and it is a gift that lasts a lifetime. Remember, every book is a doorway to a new adventure, a new lesson, and a new dream waiting to be discovered.

Let’s make reading an adventure worth sharing!

With love and encouragement,

Mandy x
